  1. Valves
  2.  
  3. A valve is built
  4. like a nail with a
  5. large head and a
  6. blunted point.  The
  7. head has a beveled
  8. edge ground around
  9. the bottom which
  10. fits into the seat
  11. in the cylinder
  12. head.  At the
  13. opposite end of the
  14. valve stem a
  15. shallow groove is
  16. cut around the
  17. circumference of
  18. the stem. 
  19.  
  20. A valve seat is a
  21. smooth surface or
  22. "seat" ground into
  23. the cylinder head
  24. at the edge of an
  25. exhaust or intake
  26. port opening to the
  27. combustion chamber. 
  28. The seat forms a
  29. gas-tight seal with
  30. valve. 
  31.  
  32. To mount a valve in
  33. the cylinder head,
  34. the valve stem is
  35. inserted into the
  36. valve guide from
  37. the bottom
  38. (combustion chamber
  39. side) of the head. 
  40. The valve is pushed
  41. into the seat and
  42. the valve spring is
  43. slide down over the
  44. stem to rest
  45. against the top of
  46. the cylinder head. 
  47. The valve spring
  48. cap is placed on
  49. top of the spring
  50. and a special tool
  51. is used to compress
  52. the valve spring
  53. until the cap
  54. slides below the
  55. groove cut into the
  56. stem.  A retaining
  57. clip is inserted
  58. into the groove and
  59. the tool is
  60. removed.  At this
  61. point the valve
  62. spring holds the
  63. valve firmly
  64. against the valve
  65. seat until it is
  66. compressed by
  67. pressure from a
  68. rocker arm.
