- Valves
-
- A valve is built
- like a nail with a
- large head and a
- blunted point. The
- head has a beveled
- edge ground around
- the bottom which
- fits into the seat
- in the cylinder
- head. At the
- opposite end of the
- valve stem a
- shallow groove is
- cut around the
- circumference of
- the stem.
-
- A valve seat is a
- smooth surface or
- "seat" ground into
- the cylinder head
- at the edge of an
- exhaust or intake
- port opening to the
- combustion chamber.
- The seat forms a
- gas-tight seal with
- valve.
-
- To mount a valve in
- the cylinder head,
- the valve stem is
- inserted into the
- valve guide from
- the bottom
- (combustion chamber
- side) of the head.
- The valve is pushed
- into the seat and
- the valve spring is
- slide down over the
- stem to rest
- against the top of
- the cylinder head.
- The valve spring
- cap is placed on
- top of the spring
- and a special tool
- is used to compress
- the valve spring
- until the cap
- slides below the
- groove cut into the
- stem. A retaining
- clip is inserted
- into the groove and
- the tool is
- removed. At this
- point the valve
- spring holds the
- valve firmly
- against the valve
- seat until it is
- compressed by
- pressure from a
- rocker arm.
